Indian carmakers had a very strong October 2026. As of 2 November 2026, Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra and Hyundai have each reported record numbers, and Tata Motors held second place among passenger-vehicle makers. Festive demand around Navratri and Dussehra, with Diwali still ahead in November, is the main reason reported. Here is what the figures say, where the sources disagree, and what it means if you are planning to buy.

October 2026 car sales at a glance

Sales figures differ depending on whether a source counts wholesales (dispatches to dealers), domestic sales only, or totals including exports. Because of this, two reputable outlets can print slightly different numbers for the same company. The table below uses figures from the two sources we read and flags the gaps.

Autocar India states an industry total of 4,98,208 registrations across 14 manufacturers, yet the units in its own table add up to roughly 5.14 lakh. We therefore treat the industry total as approximate and focus on company-level numbers.

What stands out

Maruti stays far ahead

Maruti’s lead is large. BusinessToday breaks down its domestic number into 97,787 utility vehicles (up 26%), 1,00,877 passenger cars (up 18%) and 13,720 vans (flat). In other words, utility vehicles are now about as important to Maruti as hatchbacks and sedans, which matches the wider shift of Indian buyers towards SUVs.

Mahindra: record volume, slow growth

Mahindra’s 73,338 SUVs are its best monthly figure, but growth over last year was only about 2%. Its executive Velusamy R credited the festive season and a refreshed portfolio, and BusinessToday notes strong interest in the XUV 3XO ZNG, the company’s first CNG vehicle. Mahindra and Tata are almost level at the second and third spots, which is why Autocar India described Tata as retaining second place by a thin margin.

Tata’s EV push

Tata’s EV numbers are worth watching. BusinessToday reports 16,244 EVs (domestic and international) against 9,286 a year earlier, a rise of 75%. Autocar India gives 14,552 units, so the exact count depends on what is included. Either way, EVs are a growing share of Tata’s passenger-vehicle business. MG is even more EV-heavy, with Autocar India reporting 5,877 of its 7,014 units as EVs.

Hyundai and the new Bayon

Hyundai’s Tarun Garg said the newly launched Bayon would add momentum. If you are curious about that car, see our guide to the Hyundai Bayon variants and prices.

Toyota is the outlier

Toyota’s domestic sales fell about 26.7% from last year in Autocar India’s table. The sources we read do not give a reason, so we will not guess. Honda (-8.1%) and Renault (-9.2%) also fell on that table, though Autocar India notes that reporting methods differ between companies and months, so compare with care.

Wholesale numbers versus what you can buy

Most of these figures are wholesales, meaning cars sent from factories to dealers. They show manufacturer confidence and festive stocking, but they are not the same as customers taking delivery. Registration data (such as Vahan) tracks cars actually registered on the road, which is why Skoda Auto Volkswagen’s number in the Autocar India table is based on registrations instead. When a headline says “record sales”, check which of the two it is talking about.

What to do now if you are buying a car

  • Check waiting periods before Diwali. High festive demand can stretch delivery for popular SUVs. Ask your dealer for the expected delivery date in writing for your exact variant and colour.
  • Ask for discounts on current stock. Strong demand means fewer bargains on the best sellers, but slower models may still carry year-end offers. Compare at least three dealers.
  • Confirm the on-road price. Ex-showroom prices are only one part; insurance, registration and road tax vary by state, so ask for a full breakup.
  • Think about running costs. If you drive long distances, compare petrol, CNG, hybrid and EV options. Our explainer on hybrid cars that can cross 1,000 km on a tank may help.
  • Look at safety. Check standard airbags and braking features. See what the government has proposed in our post on mandatory emergency braking.
  • Do not rush because of a record month. Record sales say the market is busy, not that a particular car is right for you. Match the car to your budget, parking space and yearly distance.

Frequently asked questions

Which carmaker sold the most cars in India in October 2026?

Maruti Suzuki, by a wide margin. BusinessToday reports 2,16,789 domestic units, and Autocar India reports a total of 2,76,120 including exports, its highest-ever monthly figure.

Who was second, Tata or Mahindra?

Autocar India says Tata Motors retained second place. Tata’s passenger vehicles are reported at 73,894 (or 73,002 in the table) against Mahindra’s 73,338 SUVs, so the gap is very small and depends on which figure is used.

Do record sales mean car prices will rise?

The sources we read do not say anything about price changes, so we cannot say. Prices are set by each company, and you should check the latest ex-showroom price with your dealer before booking.

Bottom line

October 2026 was a festive-season high for Maruti, Mahindra and Hyundai, with Tata closely behind and EVs growing. Toyota, Honda and Renault went the other way on Autocar India’s table. Numbers vary slightly by source, so use them as a guide to the market, not as a reason to buy. Decide on budget, need and delivery time, and confirm prices with your dealer on the day you book.
